Premier 3 - match report V Wanderers
Match Report Premier 3: Merewether Carlton vs. Wanderers 15/5/11
The sun was shining and the birds were chirping on a glorious Sunday at number one. This was great news for the Greens third grade boys who had been looking forward to the match against the team without a suburb all year.
The team was largely unchanged from last week with Johl Garret suffering an elbow injury while Nick Davies was a late withdrawal due to a mysterious injury sustained while apparently on a bender in Maitland (why he was in Maitland is anyone’s guess). Third grade also welcomed back local DJ and Nathan Tinkler wannabe Moe Mathews after a stint in second grade.
It was obvious from the kickoff that the forwards meant business this week as the dressing down the coaches gave the boys during the week did the trick. Self proclaimed super coach Jode Roach was a standout in his opening stint. Sam Rowe and Tommy Lunch also didn’t take a backwards step. The Greens forward completely dominated the ball and field possession and it was only some good luck and determined defence that kept the hosts in the game. The boot of Evan Renfrew was on fire in the first half, probably due to a midweek kicking session with goal kicking guru Nick Riley. At the half the score was 9-0 after 3 penalties to the good guys.
Star injured fullback Eddie Clifton had this to say of the team’s tryless first half efforts “The lads are remaining patient and relying heavily on the boot of RenThrough, they need to have a nibble at the try line. Like they say, the dog that didn’t nibble never grew!”
The second half began much like the first with the greens forward completely dominating the breakdown while some clever kicking from the ever reliable Dunc Williamson (who might have found a yard of pace in the offseason) kept the Wanderers completely out of the game. However the Greens boys still couldn’t break through for a try. It took the injection of part time fisherman and full blown nutcase Danny Curtis to swoop on a loose ball from the opposition in their own half to finally break the game open. He scored under the posts to give the boys a commanding 16-0 lead midway through the second half. The greens played very attacking football for the rest of the game with fullback James Dillon and Moe looking particularly dangerous. For all the attack though the movements ultimately lacked the finishing touch with the game ending 16-0.
The game was easily the most complete performance for the team this year. Everyone contributed except for Ben Zwolinski who only got on for 45 seconds in his comeback appearance.
