Play Rugby for the Greens

Merewether Carlton has a long and proud history in the Newcastle Rugby scene. First formed 80 years ago, the Greens are the city’s most successful team boasting more Club Championships and grade premierships than any other club. With the Green Room situated in the picturesque rose gardens of Mitchell Park there is no better place to be on a Saturday afternoon in winter than running onto the field in front of Green Corner wearing the Bottle Green jersey of Merewether Carlton.

At Merewether we value the involvement of players of all shapes, sizes and abilities. No matter how inexperienced or talented you are, we have a spot for you in one of our six senior male teams or if you of the female variety, we also have a highly successful and committed group of women who love to get together and belt the opposition enthusiastically.

Over the last decade we have build a winning culture at the club. A culture that begins on the training paddock and transfers to the field on Saturdays with a never say die ethos that brought us to seven grand finals from seven teams in 2009 with four major premierships.

That culture extends from the playing field to a very active social calendar beginning with the Season Launch on the hallowed turf of our home ground, Townson Oval to the President’s lunches with guest speakers, Olympic nights where all grade come together in their club houses named after four past legends of the club; Neil ‘Noodles’ Adams, Lin ‘Flemo’ Fleming, Ted ‘Spider’ Clarke and Idris ‘Doc’ Morgan.

There are many other functions during the year to keep the social life going including golf and bowls days, the annual Ball and of course presentation night where we celebrate our victories and blame the refs for our loses.

The question should not be “Why play for the Greens?’ rather it should be “Why would play for anyone else??”
