Play Rugby In Newcastle

Would you like to improve your skills by coming to Australia and playing rugby? As an added bonus, you’ll stay in a beautiful part of the world, in a large, but friendly city, and close to some of the best beaches in the world.

At Merewether Carlton Rugby Club, we are always on the lookout for players wanting a quality rugby experience. Whether you are traveling or relocating within Australia, and seeking a like-minded rugby community, or coming from overseas, and wish to join a club with great football and social culture, Merewether makes great base.

We are just 2km from the centre of Newcastle, the sixth largest city in Australia. Newcastle boasts a busy working port, with employment in industry, retail, technology and tourism. Sydney is just two hours away, the world renowned vineyards of the Hunter Valley are 1 hour away, while the beautiful north coast stretches out to the north of the city.

Our rugby history is unmatched in the region. The club has been Newcastle Club Champions for the past six seasons, and most teams feature in the finals every season. The heritage-rated clubhouse beside the ground has game-day atmosphere that ranks among any rugby experience you will find in the world.

With 6 senior grades, a Women’s team, and juniors from U/8s to U/18s, and an active and vibrant Supporters Club, Merewether is the club to play for in Newcastle.

Wyn Meirion Jones, from Wales, says:

“Upon arriving in Newcastle 3 years ago the first thing I did was to join my local rugby club - by chance not only did I join the most successful club in town, but also the most sociable. The welcome I received in the first training session made me feel at home and I can't go anywhere in town without bumping into a Greens player or supporter - especially in the pubs!

The 100+ at training twice a week speaks volumes for the quality and popularity of the sessions, and with the beach just over the road for a cool-down, it's certainly different to life back in North Wales.

It's a very well organised club with plenty of events and parties during the season to get to know players off the field. The opportunity to meet locals through Merewether Carlton was the best way of getting straight into the Aussie lifestyle.

It’s just a shame these Aussies can't sing as good as the Welsh :) Calon Lan!

I'm glad I went Green."
